What Is Express Entry?

Express Entry is Canada's flagship electronic immigration system, introduced in 2015 to manage applications for permanent residence under three federal economic programs. It is designed to process applications quickly — typically within six months — making it the fastest pathway to Canadian permanent residence for skilled workers from around the world.

The system works on a points-based ranking mechanism called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). When you create an Express Entry profile, you receive a CRS score based on factors such as your age, education, language proficiency, and work experience. Profiles are placed in the Express Entry pool, and candidates with the highest CRS scores are invited to apply for permanent residence through regular invitation rounds conducted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Since 2023, IRCC also conducts category-based selection rounds that target candidates with specific qualifications — such as healthcare workers, STEM professionals, tradespeople, transport workers, and French-language speakers — in addition to the general draws. Understanding how these rounds work and positioning your profile strategically is essential to receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA).

Three Programs Under Express Entry

Each program has distinct eligibility criteria. Determine which stream matches your profile to maximize your chances.

Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)

The FSW program is for skilled professionals with foreign work experience who want to immigrate to Canada permanently. Candidates are assessed on a 67-point selection grid before entering the Express Entry pool.

  • Work Experience: At least 1 year of continuous full-time (or equivalent part-time) skilled work experience in a TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupation within the last 10 years
  • Language: Minimum CLB 7 in all four abilities (speaking, listening, reading, writing) in English or French
  • Education: Canadian post-secondary credential or foreign equivalent assessed through an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)
  • Selection Grid: Must score at least 67 out of 100 points on the FSW six-factor grid (age, education, experience, language, arranged employment, adaptability)

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

The CEC program is designed for individuals who have already gained skilled work experience in Canada and wish to transition to permanent residence. There is no education requirement for CEC.

  • Canadian Experience: At least 12 months of full-time (or equivalent part-time) skilled work experience in Canada within the last 3 years
  • Occupation Level: Work experience must be in a TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupation under the National Occupational Classification (NOC)
  • Language (TEER 0/1): CLB 7 in all four abilities for managerial and professional occupations
  • Language (TEER 2/3): CLB 5 in all four abilities for technical and skilled trade occupations

Federal Skilled Trades (FST)

The FST program targets skilled tradespeople who want to become permanent residents of Canada. It emphasizes hands-on skills and practical qualifications over formal education.

  • Work Experience: At least 2 years of full-time (or equivalent part-time) work experience in a skilled trade within the last 5 years
  • Job Offer or Certificate: A valid job offer of at least 1 year from up to 2 Canadian employers, OR a certificate of qualification issued by a Canadian provincial or territorial authority
  • Language (Speaking/Listening): Minimum CLB 5 in speaking and listening
  • Language (Reading/Writing): Minimum CLB 4 in reading and writing

Frequently Asked Questions

Once you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA), IRCC aims to process your permanent residence application within six months. However, the time spent in the Express Entry pool waiting for an ITA varies depending on your CRS score and the frequency of invitation rounds. Some candidates receive an ITA within weeks, while others may wait several months or need to improve their score.

CRS cut-off scores change with every invitation round. For general draws, scores have historically ranged between 430 and 520 points. Category-based draws may have different cut-offs. The best strategy is to maximize your score as much as possible through language improvement, additional education, Canadian work experience, or obtaining a Provincial Nominee Program nomination (which adds 600 points).

Yes. A job offer is not required to enter the Express Entry pool or to receive an ITA. Note: CRS points for arranged employment were removed on March 25, 2025. Many successful candidates receive invitations without any arranged employment.

Express Entry profiles are valid for 12 months. If you do not receive an ITA within that period, your profile expires and is removed from the pool. You can create a new profile and re-enter the pool at any time, provided you still meet the eligibility requirements. There is no limit to the number of times you can submit a new profile.
