Citizenship Eligibility Requirements

To apply for Canadian citizenship, you must meet all of the following requirements under the Citizenship Act.

Permanent Resident Status

You must be a Canadian permanent resident (PR). You must not be under a removal order and must not have had your PR status revoked. Certain criminal convictions may also affect eligibility.

Physical Presence: 1,095 Days

You must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) within the 5 years immediately before applying. Days as a PR count fully; days as a temporary resident or protected person before becoming a PR count at half value (max 365 days).

Income Tax Compliance

You must have filed income taxes for at least 3 tax years within the 5-year window if required to do so under the Income Tax Act. Obtaining a Confirmation of Filing from the CRA is recommended before applying.

Language Requirement (Ages 18–54)

Applicants aged 18–54 must demonstrate adequate knowledge of English or French — equivalent to CLB/NCLC Level 4. This can be demonstrated with an approved language test result or other evidence of proficiency.

Knowledge of Canada (Ages 18–54)

Applicants aged 18–54 must pass a citizenship knowledge test covering Canadian history, values, institutions, and symbols — based on the official study guide Discover Canada. The test has 30 questions; you must answer at least 23 correctly (75%).

No Prohibitions

You must not be prohibited from applying. Prohibitions include: being charged with, on trial for, or convicted of an indictable offence in the preceding 4 years; being under a removal order; or being subject to certain declarations under the Citizenship Act.

Physical Presence — The Most Complex Requirement

Calculating your 1,095 days correctly is critical. An error can delay your application by years.

What Counts — And What Doesn't

  • Days as a PR inside Canada: count fully (1 day = 1 day)
  • Days as a temp resident/protected person before PR: count at ½ value (max 365 days credit)
  • Days outside Canada: do NOT count, regardless of reason
  • Days before becoming a temporary resident: do NOT count
  • Day of arrival and departure: both count as days in Canada

Frequently Asked Questions

Current IRCC processing times for citizenship applications are approximately 12 to 18 months from the date your complete application is received, though this varies. Processing time includes document review, background checks, citizenship test, and ceremony scheduling. Applications with complications (unreported absences, criminal history, misrepresentation concerns) may take significantly longer. Mohamed Aboud can help you submit a complete and accurate application to minimize delays.

Yes, but at half value and with a cap. Days spent in Canada as a temporary resident (e.g., on a work permit, study permit, or visitor status) or as a protected person before you became a permanent resident count at ½ value toward the 1,095-day requirement, with a maximum credit of 365 days. For example, 2 years (730 days) as a temporary resident would give you 365 days of credit. Once you become a PR, every day in Canada counts fully. An RCIC can help you accurately calculate your physical presence using your travel history and immigration records.

If you fail the citizenship knowledge test, you will be given a second opportunity to rewrite it. If you fail the second test, you will be scheduled for a hearing before a citizenship official who will assess your knowledge in person. Mohamed Aboud provides test preparation support to help you study effectively and pass on your first attempt. The test is based entirely on the Discover Canada study guide, which is available free online from the Government of Canada.
